Welcome to The Boaters Lounge! On this episode we’re diving deep into one of the most fascinating and unexpected heroes of the Chesapeake Bay: oysters! Broadcasting from the scenic Inner Harbor Marina, Allie and Andy sit down with Kellie Fiala from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). Together, they explore how oyster restoration is not just about growing seafood but restoring an entire ecosystem.
Why Oysters Matter: The Keystone Warriors
Oysters aren’t just a snack—they’re a keystone species! With each oyster filtering up to 50 gallons of water per day, these shellfish are the Bay’s natural cleanup crew. Their reef-like structures provide a habitat for fish, crabs, and other marine life, creating an underwater metropolis that helps keep the ecosystem in balance.
However, decades of overharvesting and pollution have drastically reduced oyster populations. But with Kellie and the CBF at the helm, the mission to revive these mighty mollusks is well underway. They’re using techniques like recycling oyster shells and cultivating “spat on shell” (baby oysters attached to recycled shells) to bring new oyster life back into the Bay.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation: Fighting for a Healthy Bay
With goals like education, restoration, litigation, and advocacy, CBF is dedicated to restoring the Bay’s health for future generations. And oyster restoration is at the heart of their mission.
Through the Maryland Oyster Restoration Program, CBF runs a variety of initiatives aimed at rebuilding oyster reefs and engaging the community in conservation efforts. From large-scale restoration projects to hands-on oyster gardening, the Foundation is on a mission to rebuild the Bay’s oyster population—and they’re bringing local communities along for the ride.
Restoration in Action: Big Projects, Small Gardens
CBF’s oyster restoration program uses a two-pronged approach: large-scale restoration and community-driven oyster gardening.
- Large-Scale Restoration: This involves setting spat (oyster larvae) on recycled shells and planting them on sanctuary reefs. These reefs are protected areas where oysters can grow, filter water, and create habitats without the threat of harvesting.
- Oyster Gardening: Want to get your hands wet? Oyster gardening offers a way for individuals and communities to help restore the Bay right from their backyard! Volunteers can cultivate oysters, nurture them, and learn about marine conservation in the process. It’s a hands-on experience that allows everyone to contribute to the Bay’s recovery while becoming ambassadors for its future.
Sustainable Seafood: Oysters on the Menu
Can eating oysters actually help the Bay? Absolutely! Kellie shared how sustainable oyster farming, or aquaculture, supports oyster restoration by taking pressure off wild populations. Many farmed oysters are “triploid,” meaning they’re genetically modified to be non-reproducing, allowing them to be farmed year-round. So, the next time you enjoy a plate of oysters, know you’re supporting a sustainable and eco-friendly practice that’s part of the Bay’s larger restoration story.
How Boaters Can Make a Difference
For boaters and Bay enthusiasts, there are plenty of ways to get involved in saving the Chesapeake. From oyster gardening to shell recycling programs, every action helps contribute to a healthier ecosystem.
Here’s how you can lend a hand:
- Join an Oyster Gardening Program: Nurture oysters from spat to maturity and help create a new generation of natural water filters.
- Recycle Oyster Shells: CBF and other organizations collect shells from restaurants and individuals to use as a base for growing new oysters.
- Spread the Word: Educate others about the importance of oysters in keeping the Bay clean and vibrant.
A Future for the Bay
Kellie’s dedication to the Bay is clear, and her work is inspiring others to join the fight for a cleaner, healthier Chesapeake.
