Navigating the Great Loop with Loop Life Academy

Welcome to the Boater’s Lounge, where we explore all things boating, from expert tips to inspiring journeys. In this episode, we’re kicking off the year with a deep dive into one of the most iconic boating adventures: The Great Loop. Joining us is Allison Major, founder of Loop Life Academy, here to share her personal experience completing the loop with her family and how she’s turned that passion into a resource for aspiring loopers.

What Is the Great Loop?

The Great Loop is a waterway journey circling the eastern United States and parts of Canada. It encompasses the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, rivers, canals, and the Atlantic Ocean. Every looper’s journey is unique, whether they take side trips to iconic spots or stick to the main route.

Allison’s Journey: From Novice to Looper Extraordinaire

Allison and her family didn’t grow up boating. They started small, experimenting with sailing on Lake Michigan six years ago. Inspired by YouTube channels like Distant Shores, Allison discovered the Great Loop and convinced her husband to embark on the adventure. The family eventually upgraded to a Beneteau 423 sailboat, equipped with three cabins and features perfect for navigating the loop.

Highlights of the Loop

Some of Allison’s favorite moments include:

  • Chesapeake Bay: A perfect starting point for its mix of sailing and easy anchorage access.
  • New York City: Visiting iconic landmarks like Ellis Island by boat.
  • The Erie Canal: A historically rich route through charming small towns.
  • Northern Michigan: Allison’s home state and a haven for sailors.
  • Side Trips: Exploring the Bahamas, the Dry Tortugas, and Washington, D.C., added depth to their journey.

Challenges Along the Way

The loop isn’t without its challenges. Early on, their windlass broke, leading to manual anchor-hauling and a month-long stop for repairs in Annapolis. Weather posed another significant obstacle during their Gulf of Mexico crossing, where rough seas made for an uncomfortable night. Despite these hurdles, Allison’s family grew stronger, building resilience and communication skills along the way.

Rewards of Loop Life

The rewards far outweighed the challenges. The immersive learning opportunities for the kids in history, geography, and marine biology were invaluable. Beyond that, the experience strengthened family bonds and created unforgettable memories.

From Experience to Academy

Allison founded Loop Life Academy to guide others through the journey. From helping families homeschool on the water to advising remote workers on how to adapt to boat life, Loop Life Academy offers resources, courses, and a community for aspiring loopers.

Top Tips for Aspiring Loopers

  1. Start Small: Spend time on the water to build confidence. Join a boat club or take boating safety courses.
  2. Plan for Your Fears: Address hesitations by researching costs, safety, and logistics.
