Looping Across America with Scho & Jo

Welcome back to The Boaters Lounge! On this episode, our hosts chat with adventurers Jen and Elliot—better known as Scho & Jo—about their incredible journey on the Great Loop. Over the past year, this duo has shared stories, explored new waters, and inspired their 15,000 YouTube followers with every nautical mile. So, grab your life vests as we sail through their most exciting moments, challenges, and insights from one of America’s most ambitious boating routes.

The Great Loop Dream: From Lockdown to Loopers

Jen and Elliot’s Great Loop adventure began, surprisingly, during COVID. After months of lockdown abroad, they returned to the U.S. itching for a new adventure—and the Loop was calling. With no boating experience, they jumped in, bought a 34-foot marine trawler named Pivot, and decided to learn along the way. As Elliot put it, they didn’t want to wait around for “the perfect time” to start living their dreams. Instead, they dove in headfirst, using problem-solving skills, some help from previous boat owners, and a lot of determination to keep them afloat.

Life on the Loop: Lessons in Patience and Problem-Solving

Living on a boat isn’t all sunsets and calm seas. For Scho & Jo, each day was a fresh challenge, especially in the early days when they had no idea how to dock or manage current. They learned on the job, from replacing leaking shaft seals to fixing broken coolant hoses—all while navigating different waters and weather conditions. “We learned so much from every mishap,” says Jen, “and we now appreciate even more the power of patience and respect for the water.”

This year-long voyage was, as Jen describes, “a journey at 6.5 knots”—and sometimes that slow pace brought the biggest surprises.

A Budget Adventure: Boating Without Breaking the Bank

One of the standout aspects of Jen and Elliot’s Loop was their dedication to sharing every expense. They knew that budget transparency could help others realize that such an adventure was attainable. Their total? Around $40,000, covering essentials like marina fees, maintenance, fuel, food, and dog care. By sharing their finances on their blog, they hope to encourage young boaters and show that you don’t need to be retired or wealthy to chase the Great Loop dream.

“We’re here to prove that it’s possible on a budget,” Jen explains. “This isn’t just a journey for millionaires; it’s a path open to anyone willing to learn and go with the flow.”

Planning for Weather and Discovering Hidden Gems

Weather on the Great Loop is unpredictable, but Jen and Elliot quickly learned to track forecasts with apps like Windy and PredictWind, setting go/no-go criteria for each region. They found that favorite parts of the Loop often coincided with great weather stretches. For them, the North Channel and Thousand Islands in Canada were the ultimate summer-camp vibes with crystal-clear waters and lush green forests. “Those perfect sunny days made Canada feel like a fairytale,” says Elliot.

More Than Just Destinations: A Journey of Discovery

For Scho & Jo, it wasn’t just about the places—they also loved the journey itself. “Traveling at 6.5 knots, you see things differently,” Jen says. The slower pace led them to small towns and tucked-away spots they’d otherwise never visit. From anchoring under the Statue of Liberty to navigating the quiet charm of the Midwest rivers, they’ve come to appreciate the journey just as much as each destination.

Scho & Jo’s Advice to Future Loopers

For anyone thinking about the Great Loop, their advice is simple: don’t wait. “Life is meant to be lived now,” says Jen. They also recommend getting some professional training or taking a boating course early on to save time and stress. Most importantly, they remind us that there’s no shame in asking for help. As Elliot wisely says, “Not every lesson needs to be learned the hard way.”

What’s Next for Scho & Jo?

With their Loop adventure complete, Jen and Elliot are taking on new challenges, from tackling boat projects on Pivot to exploring by bike with an upcoming ride across Iowa. While they’re anchored for now in the Florida Keys, Pivot will soon head north as they continue their journey of discovery, one adventure at a time.
