How Marine Trades Associations Shape the Boating Industry

Welcome back to The Boater’s Lounge, your go-to podcast for everything boating! In this episode, we’re diving into the world of Marine Trades Associations and the crucial role they play in shaping the boating industry.

Joining us is John Stefancik, Executive Director of the Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM). John takes us behind the scenes of how associations like the MTAM advocate for policies, support workforce development, and enhance the boating experience—not just in Maryland, but across the country.

The Backbone of the Boating Industry

Marine Trades Associations exist across the U.S. to support the recreational boating industry. In Maryland alone, the industry has a $4.2 billion economic impact, with over 1,000 businesses and 16,000 direct workers contributing to the boating ecosystem. These associations advocate for fair legislation, fund workforce training programs, and work to keep waterways accessible for everyone.

John emphasizes that the Chesapeake Bay region—often overlooked—has some of the most revolutionary innovations in boating happening right in Maryland. The region is home to businesses that influence boating trends worldwide, yet many people don’t realize the extent of its impact.

Workforce Development: Training the Next Generation

One of the MTAM’s biggest initiatives is workforce development, ensuring that the next generation of marine professionals is trained and ready to meet industry demands. Since 2014, the MTAM has placed hundreds of young people into internships with boatyards, marinas, and marine businesses, helping them develop skills in:

  • Engine repair (outboards & diesel)
  • Marine electronics & electrical systems
  • Canvas & upholstery work
  • Composite repair & fiberglass work
  • Marina operations & customer service

Many of these interns go on to secure full-time jobs after their six-week training, filling critical roles in an industry that is experiencing a worker shortage.

Advocacy & Policy: Protecting Boater Interests

One of the biggest wins for the MTAM and other marine trade organizations in recent years has been the capped boat tax in Maryland. Thanks to their advocacy, the state limits sales tax on boat purchases at $15,900, which not only makes buying a boat more affordable but also helps fund the Waterway Improvement Fund—the program that supports dredging, navigational aids, and public boat ramps across the state.

Another recent legislative success was preventing restrictive speed limits along the East Coast. NOAA originally proposed a 10 mph speed limit for boats as small as 35 feet, aiming to protect endangered right whales. However, after working closely with industry leaders, MTAM helped demonstrate that modern sonar and navigation technologyalready mitigate collision risks, leading to a rollback of the regulation.

The Future of Boating: Trends & Challenges

John sees technology as the most exciting shift in the boating industry today. Advancements like:

  • Joystick control systems (making docking and maneuvering easier for new boaters)
  • Seakeeper gyrostabilizers (reducing boat roll for a smoother ride)
  • More fuel-efficient and eco-friendly options

These innovations are making boating more accessible and enjoyable. However, challenges remain—especially as the industry faces environmental concerns and a need for skilled professionals to maintain and service boats.

How You Can Get Involved

Whether you’re a boater, a business owner, or someone looking to start a career in the marine industry, Marine Trades Associations offer a wealth of resources. From training programs to policy advocacy, these organizations work to keep boating safe, accessible, and sustainable for everyone.
